How To Achieve What You Want [In Life]
How to Achieve What You Want (in Life)
Many of us, myself included, struggle to achieve what we want to in our lives.
Leading to unhappiness, discontentment, and dissatisfaction.
We stay stuck where you are, we find it difficult to move forward, to progress.
Even when we are yearning to achieve a more fulfilling life than the one we’re currently living.
One in which we are achieving what we want to achieve, in which we’re having success, in which we’re happy, fulfilled and experiencing joy!
So, how do we actually achieve what we want?
How do we ensure that we live thriving, fulfilled lives?
What do we need to do? What can we do?
What steps do we take to achieve?
Everyone is capable of achieving the success that they desire and living the life that they dream of having.
The difference between those who achieve and those who don’t is that the former make the commitment, put in the work, are willing to change and actually believe that they can achieve.
These are some of my suggestions and recommendations for what you can do, if you are genuinely serious about achieving success in what you want in life.
Figure Out What You Want
First, you’ve got to figure out what it is that you actually want!
Yes we may well be achieving but are we achieving what we want?!
We think we know what we want to achieve but more often than not we don’t.
And therein lies the problem.
Because we haven’t initially taken the time to figure out what it is that we really want, and why.
So that is your first step, figure out what it is that you want and the why behind it.
If you want to know how to do this then check out my blog all about this!
Believe You Can
It’s all very well figuring out what it is that you want but it’s a totally different thing to have complete faith in believing that you can have it.
If you don’t believe then you’ll find that you won’t be taking the steps necessary to achieve what you want.
Whenever you find yourself doubting check back in with your ‘why’. Why you want to do what you’re doing in the first place.
That is why, when you’re figuring it out, you need to know your why. It’s what will drive you, keep you focused and keep you on track.
Create a Plan
You’ve figured out what you want, you strongly believe it will happen, so of course you just want to get going and just do it.
But first, take a step back, take a breath and rather than just dive straight in, take some time to plan.
Set goals, steps, timescales. Be realistic, be patient!
Be Prepared:
* to put in the time, energy, effort, money
How much are you willing to invest in achieving what it is you want? There will be sacrifices you’ll need to make, things you’ll need to let go of.
* to commit
How hard are you willing to work for it? Can you see committing to what it is you’ll need to do, not just for the short and medium term, but for the long term as well?
* to step out of your comfort zone
No one said it was going to be easy! There are no promises of constant comfort. To experience new things you must do new things. Which means that you’ll be doing things you’re not used to, that are out of your comfort zone.
* to get in the trenches
Success doesn’t just happen overnight. Well, okay for some it might but for the majority of us it doesn’t! You’ve got to do the work, you’ve got to get down to the nitty gritty, put in the hours, put in the effort in order to see the results.
* to experience failure, pain and discomfort
You will make mistakes, you will fail and you will have to dust yourself down and pick yourself up many times. But with each time, you'll learn more and the next time will be that bit easier to navigate. You'll also be that bit closer to achievement.
Have Patience and Gratitude
You know what you want, you’re putting in the work yet you’re still not seeing the results you want or expected.
It’s an old cliche but it’s true, these things take time. You’ve got to put in the work, especially if you want what you achieve to be sustainable.
Keep a track of all that you achieve, and be thankful for every little step along the way.
This will be a definite mood lifter when you’re hitting struggles on your journey.
Let Things Go & Allow Room for New Things
To achieve a life that you want you will need to let go of some, if not most, of the life you’re already living. Don’t worry this isn’t as bad as it may sound!
It’s about removing distractions, keeping away from situations and people that perhaps don’t have your best interests at heart and keep you stuck where you are.
It’s about changing your behaviour, your habits, your way of being.
You will be transitioning and other people in your life may not know how to ‘be’ with the new you. You may not know how to ‘be’ with the new you.
You will feel vulnerable, unsure, and the ‘pull’ back to your previous life and way of being will often show up.
It will be hard to resist.
But resist you must, if you have things that you want to achieve that won’t be achieved if you continue living as you are.
Take Action and Be Consistent
Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk as well. Start showing up as the person you want to be.
Be the person you need to be to be able to achieve what you want to achieve.
It’s not a case of fake it until you make it, more like be it until you feel it and until you see it!
Most importantly, be consistent!
You can’t show up every now and again and expect the results you want.
Consistency is key, and yes it can be boring, tedious, repetitive.
There will be many, many, many times when you will just not want to do the things you need to do!
But to ensure success, to achieve, you must, must, must, be consistent with what you need to do to get there.
Have Fun
Enjoy the journey. Again another cliche, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.
Yes it will feel amazing once you’ve achieved but … usually only if you’ve actually enjoyed the journey to get there.
Think back on other achievements in your life. Did they feel better or worse depending on how you got there?
I know for me, many times, it was a sense of relief to achieve, but then this was often followed by a period of feeling low, because I’d not actually enjoyed the journey. It had been all about the end goal and once that was achieved it was like, okay well now what?
So, have fun along the way, enjoy the process, the learning, the skills you’ll acquire.
Then when you do achieve you’ll be ready to move onto your next goal!
